    冷酷的美人
    約翰•濟慈

    I

    Ah, what can ail thee, wretched wight,
    Alone and palely loitering?
    The sedge is wither'd from the lake,
    And no birds sing.
    啊,落魄的健兒,是什麼把你折磨,
    讓你獨自面色蒼白地遊蕩?
    湖中的水草已經枯萎,
    鳥兒也不再歌唱。

    II

    Ah, what can ail thee, wretched wight,
    So haggard and so woe-begone?
    The squirrel's granary is full,
    And the harvest's done.
    啊,落魄的健兒,是什麼把你折磨,
    讓你如此疲憊,如此痛苦?
    松鼠的糧倉滿滿噹噹,
    莊稼已經收割。

    III

    I see a lily on thy brow,
    With anguish moist and fever dew;
    And on thy cheek a fading rose
    Fast withereth too.
    我看到他額頭的峰頂有一隻百合,
    帶著焦灼的霧氣和炙熱的露水;
    在他臉頰的山坳有一朵玫瑰,
    也在迅速凋謝。

    IV

    I met a lady in the meads,
    Full beautiful - a faery's child;
    Her hair was long, her foot was light,
    And her eyes were wild.
    我在草地遇到一位女士,
    光艷奪目——仙女一般;
    長發飄飄,皓足輕盈,
    她的眼睛野性十足。

    V

    I set her on my pacing steed,
    And nothing else saw all day long,
    For sideways would she lean, and sing
    A faery's song.
    我把她放在奔跑的戰馬上,
    整日凝目注視,
    她側靠著我,歌唱
    歌唱一首仙女的歌。

    VI

    I made a garland for her head,
    And bracelets too, and fragrant zone;
    She look'd at me as she did love,
    And made sweet moan.
    我為她編制花冠,
    手鍊和芬芳的腰帶;
    她看著我,彷彿真心愛慕,
    發出甜美的呻吟。

    VII

    She found me roots of relish sweet,
    And honey wild, and manna dew;
    And sure in language strange she said -
    'I love thee true.'
    她為我找來甘甜的塊莖,
    野生的蜜汁和瓊漿;
    她用奇怪的語言在說——
    “我真心愛你。”

    VIII

    She took me to her elfin grot,
    And there she gazed, and sighed deep,
    And there I shut her wild wild eyes
    So kiss'd to sleep.
    她把我帶到她精靈的巢穴,
    在那裡她凝視,發出深深的嘆息,
    在那裡我闔上她狂野的雙眸,
    親吻她直到入睡。

    IX

    And there we slumber'd on the moss,
    And there I dream'd - Ah! woe betide!
    The latest dream I ever dream'd
    On the cold hill side.
    在那裡我們在苔蘚上熟睡,
    在那裡我入夢——啊!多麼可怕!
    我所有的夢中最後一個
    就在冰冷的小山坡上。

    X

    I saw pale kings, and princes too,
    Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;
    They cried - 'La Belle Dame sans Merci
    Hath thee in thrall!'
    我看到蒼白的國王們,還有諸多君王,
    蒼白的戰士,他們全都臉色死灰;
    他們哭喊著——“冷酷的美人
    已把你俘獲!”

    XI

    I saw their starved lips in the gloam,
    With horrid warning gaped wide,
    And I awoke, and found me here
    On the cold hill side.
    我看到暮光中他們飢餓的嘴唇,
    大張著發出可怕的警告,
    我醒來,發現自己躺在
    冰冷的小山坡上。

    XII

    And this is why I sojourn here,
    Alone and palely loitering,
    Though the sedge is wither'd from the lake,
    And no birds sing.
    這就是我為何在這逗留,
    孤獨而面色蒼白地遊蕩,
    儘管湖中的水草已經枯萎,
    鳥兒也不再歌唱。

La Belle Dame,很讓我想起屈原的“山鬼”,但味道又不一樣,法語典故中帶來的中世紀貴婦的氣味還是淹沒了山鬼的氣息。

這首詩的解讀很多,我的解讀是:詩人與詩(繆斯的現代變形)的關係,這一關係彷彿來自赫西俄德《神譜》的開篇,但卻有了現代意義的變形,浪漫主義開端的詩歌審美的新轉折:夜、死亡、夢替代了古典的美學樣式。這首詩闡釋了現代詩人與詩的關係:詩在生命的根底上,在死亡之處於詩人關聯。

La Belle Dame有點莎樂美的味道,但又多了幾分自然的氣息,但又不是安格爾《泉》中的寧弗,又比寧弗多了幾分宮廷氣,西方好多相關的繪畫我個人感覺都不確切。
